AI Search Surfaces Map: Why Google AI Overview, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Doubao Give Different Results
Seeing your brand in one AI search surface but not another usually isn't a content problem. Learn the difference between Google AI Overview, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Doubao — and how to verify each surface separately.

A client tells you "I found you in AI", but when you test another AI tool you can't find yourself. This is common, and the reason is usually not your content — it's that "AI search" is not one place; it is many different surfaces.
This is an AI search surfaces map: it separates Google AI Overview, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Doubao, then explains how to verify each surface instead of treating one result as the whole story.
What is an "AI search surface"?
A surface is where users actually see the AI answer. The same content can be cited on one surface and completely absent on another, because each surface has different data sources and citation logic.
The five main surfaces
| Surface | Trigger | Answer format | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overview | Appears automatically in regular Google results | Summary at top with citations | "Who's best", "What is" |
| Google AI Mode | User switches to AI mode | Longer conversational answers | Comparison, research, decisions |
| Gemini App | Standalone app/website | Conversational answers | Daily life, work research |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing/Copilot entry | Conversational with citations | General questions |
| Doubao | Standalone app | Conversational Chinese answers | Chinese content, mainland markets |
Key point: AI Overview and AI Mode are both Google, but they are different surfaces — treat them separately.
Why results differ across surfaces
- Index sources differ: AI Overview and AI Mode rely mainly on the Google index; other tools have their own content pipelines.
- Citation preferences differ: in our testing, some tools cite UBlog and similar Hong Kong content platforms, while Google can also surface community content — so whether you exist outside your own website affects which surface finds you.
- Refresh rhythm differs: one surface may cite you today; another may not update for weeks. Always date your screenshots.
How to verify each surface
1. Test the same high-intent query on each surface
Take one query your customers really ask (e.g., "tailgate emergency repair") and test it in AI Overview, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Doubao. Record whether your brand is mentioned, where, and which source is cited.
2. Make the surface identifiable in screenshots
The screenshot should show interface markers — the "AI Mode" tab, the Gemini logo, or the Copilot/Doubao app — so the result can be attributed to a specific surface. GNS-GEO cases state whether a screenshot is desktop AI Mode or mobile AI Overview for exactly this reason.
3. Check the technical foundation
robots.txt must not block relevant crawlers, llms.txt should index your content, and Schema should be in place — these are shared foundations across surfaces (see our llms.txt / robots.txt guide).
Real example: two surfaces, two results
In the GNS-GEO New Win Tec case, the desktop Google AI Mode answer for "tailgate repair" ranked New Win Tec #2 on 04.09.2026, while the mobile AI Overview answer for "tailgate emergency repair" ranked it #1 on 03.09.2026. Both are Google, but different surfaces, different dates and different results (see the case update).
Common misconceptions
- "Ranking #1 in Gemini means #1 in Google Search" — No. The Gemini App and Google Search's AI Overview are different surfaces.
- "If AI Overview sees me, AI Mode will too" — Not necessarily. Test each one.
- "One test is enough" — AI answers change. Date your tests and re-run them regularly.
Summary
"AI search" is an ecosystem, not a single doorway. The winning habit is: separate the surfaces, verify each one, and re-test on a schedule — then you know where you are actually visible and where you need work.

FAQ
What is the difference between Google AI Overview and AI Mode?
AI Overview automatically generates a summary at the top of regular Google search results, with no mode switching needed. AI Mode is a conversation mode users switch into, with longer answers and follow-up questions. Both are Google AI search surfaces, but they are triggered differently and answer differently.
Why does the same brand appear in one AI surface but not another?
Different surfaces use different index sources, citation preferences, and refresh rhythms: Google AI Overview and AI Mode rely mainly on the Google index, while Gemini App, Copilot and Doubao each have their own data pipelines. Success on one surface does not mean success everywhere — verify each one.
How can I tell which AI surface a screenshot belongs to?
Look at the interface: AI Overview appears above regular search results; AI Mode has a conversation input and an "AI Mode" tab; Gemini App, Copilot and Doubao have their own app interfaces. Always record the surface name with the screenshot so AI Overview and AI Mode are never mixed up.
Should brands verify each AI surface separately?
Yes, start where you can measure (GNS-GEO reports currently focus on Google Gemini and AI search, with a verified Doubao case), then run reproducible tests per surface. Don't blindly optimize every surface at once — you wouldn't know what actually worked.
