When measuring GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) results, the two metrics you will see most often are Coverage and SOV (share of voice). Both measure whether AI mentions your brand, but from different angles — one asks "how many of my questions mention me?", the other asks "how much of the total conversation do I own?".
This guide explains the formulas, worked examples, and common misconceptions so you can read these metrics together with AI mention rank instead of being misled by a single number.
Why GEO needs its own metrics instead of SEO rankings
Traditional SEO asks "where does my blue link rank?". AI search answers have no clickable list to inspect. To know whether AI mentions your brand — how often, and where — you need AI-specific metrics: Coverage, AI mention rank, SOV (share of voice), and citation sources.
No measurement, no optimization. These four metrics are the GEO dashboard.
Coverage = "how many questions mention you"
Formula:
Coverage = (queries where AI mentions your brand ÷ total tested queries) × 100%
Example: You test the 5 questions your customers ask most. AI mentions your brand in 3 of them, so coverage is 60%. If none mention you, it is 0%.
Coverage reflects breadth: across the keywords and questions you target, how many of them AI answers cover. The GNS-GEO report lists coverage per keyword, so one weak question is never hidden inside a single headline number.
SOV (share of voice) = "how much of the conversation you own"
Formula:
SOV = (total mentions of your brand ÷ total mentions of all brands including competitors) × 100%
Example: In AI answers for a category of questions, all brands are mentioned 1,000 times in total. Your brand is mentioned 200 times, so SOV is 20%.
SOV reflects share: the more competitors are mentioned, the lower your share. Weighting may differ for some industries; at project kickoff GNS-GEO re-assesses the calculation so numbers can be compared fairly.
How to read the two metrics together
| Metric | What it measures | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Breadth: how many questions mention you | 3 of 5 questions → 60% |
| AI mention rank | Position: where you appear in the answer | #1 = mentioned first |
| SOV (share of voice) | Share: how much of total mentions you own | 200 of 1,000 mentions → 20% |
How to read: High coverage with a low rank means "mentioned but not prominent enough". Low coverage with high SOV means "winning a few questions but not covering the rest". Only by tracking all three do you see the complete picture.
Real example: how these metrics appear in a report
In a documented GNS-GEO case, New Win Tec Company Limited (LEEO) showed 73.2% coverage, an average AI mention rank of #2.4, and SOV of 21% on day 20 after its website launch (04.09.2026), ahead of a competitor that had long run Google ads in Google AI Mode answers for "tailgate repair" (see the case update).
These numbers are not a one-off snapshot: GNS-GEO automatically re-monitors them every week to confirm coverage and SOV keep improving.
Common misconceptions
- "100% coverage means I rank first" — No. Coverage only tells you whether you are mentioned; position is measured by AI mention rank.
- "Higher SOV is always better" — Directionally yes, but SOV has no absolute benchmark. Compare like-for-like: same industry, same period, same question set.
- "I saw #1 today, so it's done" — AI answers change. Screenshots need dates, and queries need to be reproducible, before they count as evidence.
Summary
GEO results are not a feeling — they are a set of measurable AI metrics: Coverage shows breadth, SOV shows share, AI mention rank shows position. Track all three to know which parts of your GEO strategy work and which need more work.

FAQ
How is coverage calculated in GEO?
Coverage = (queries where AI mentions your brand ÷ total tested queries) × 100%. For example, if you test 5 queries and AI mentions your brand in 3 of them, coverage is 60%. GNS-GEO reports list coverage and AI mention rank per keyword.
How is SOV (share of voice) calculated?
SOV = (total mentions of your brand ÷ total mentions of all brands including competitors for that question set) × 100%. For example, if industry answers contain 1,000 total mentions and your brand has 200, SOV is 20%. Weighting may differ for some industries; our team re-assesses this at project kickoff.
What is the difference between coverage and SOV?
Coverage measures breadth — how many of your tested questions mention your brand in AI answers. SOV measures share — how much of the total brand-mention volume you own. Read both together with AI mention rank: high coverage with a low rank means you are mentioned but not prominent enough.
Are coverage and SOV enough to measure GEO results?
Not by themselves. Also track AI mention rank (#1 = mentioned first), citation sources (which websites AI cites), and trends over time. The GNS-GEO report provides all of these metrics in one dashboard.
