Why Different AI Engines Cite Different Websites (2026)
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and DeepSeek read different sources. Learn why engines cite differently and how brands can verify each one.

"I'm ranked #1 in Gemini — why can't ChatGPT or DeepSeek find me?" This is one of the most common questions we hear. The short answer: different AI engines look at different things.
If you treat one engine's results as your "AI search performance", you will draw the wrong conclusions. This article shares our hands-on observations on why engines cite different websites — and how brands can verify each engine instead of guessing.
Why do different engines cite different sites?
1. Each engine has its own crawler and data sources
Google Gemini relies on Google's own index; ChatGPT has its own crawler; DeepSeek, Doubao, Perplexity and Claude each collect content differently. In other words: being indexed by Google does not mean other engines can see you.
2. Engines define "trustworthy sources" differently
Some engines favour official websites and news; others heavily use community forums and content platforms. In our testing we observed:
- DeepSeek cites articles from UBlog and similar Hong Kong content platforms — even when a brand has not published there, DeepSeek may use relevant UBlog articles in its answers.
- Google (Gemini / AI search) surfaces community content such as Taobao Jianghu (淘江湖) — discussions and reviews on mainland community platforms can become sources in AI answers.
These are observations from our tests, not a claim that every query behaves this way — but they already prove that each engine has a different "content map", so optimising your official website alone is not enough.
3. Content structure requirements differ
FAQ blocks, Schema, paragraph length and direct answers can work in one engine but matter less in another. For example, our Gemini research found the optimal citable paragraph is about 134–167 characters — but that number cannot simply be applied to other engines.
4. Freshness vs authority is weighted differently
Some engines reward fresh content; others will use older but authoritative sources. The same article therefore has a different "shelf life" in each engine.
How brands can verify which engines cite them
Method 1: Test each engine manually and screenshot every result
Use the same high-intent query in Gemini, ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Doubao and Perplexity. Check whether your brand appears, in which position, and which source is cited. Record the date and result each time — AI answers change, and dates let you compare trends. All of our real case studies were verified this way (see our News updates).
Method 2: Check technical accessibility
- Make sure robots.txt does not block each engine's crawler
- Provide llms.txt / llms-full.txt as a structured index
- Confirm Schema, FAQ and internal linking are in place
These are table stakes: without them, no engine will easily cite you.
Method 3: Look beyond your own website
If DeepSeek reads platforms like UBlog, brands should publish on trusted platforms beyond their official site. GNS-GEO also publishes on UBlog — if you are curious, search for "GNS GEO" and find the articles we publish there to see how we explain GEO.
FAQ
Do I need to optimise for every AI engine?
Not all at once. Start with the engine you can actually measure — GNS-GEO's report platform currently focuses on Google Gemini, with full visibility share, citation counts, mention rankings and competitor benchmarks. At the same time, lay out your presence on external platforms such as UBlog, then verify other engines one by one. Blindly "optimising for ten engines" makes it impossible to know what actually works.
Which AI engines does the free report cover?
The free report currently focuses on Google Gemini — the only engine with a complete visibility analysis today. Doubao has a verified case reference; for engines like DeepSeek that we have not fully verified, we do not claim support. We would rather be honest about what we have not done yet than overstate.
Why don't you just say you "cover all AI engines"?
Because engines read content differently, prefer different sources and refresh at different speeds — what works in one engine does not automatically work in all. We choose to verify engine by engine and report engine by engine. That is the responsible approach, and it is the biggest difference between us and agencies that claim full multi-platform coverage.

Note
AI engine mechanics and citation behaviour change over time. This article shares our observations as of September 2026 — not a guarantee. The most robust strategy is to re-test the same queries regularly, record dates, and track your real changes.
